Relay finds indoor spirit - New Hampton Tribune: News

Relay for Life participants didn't let a little thing like the weather dampen their spirits Friday night when the event was moved to the New Hampton High School gym.
The New Hampton High School was gracious enough to offer its resources to the Relay for Life event when it was forced inside by flooding of the park and forecasted thunderstorms for the area.
"This gym is one reason I could battle cancer, I was an athlete and when I was diagnosed with cancer, I wanted a game plan," said Tom Straw, who served as the event's honorary survivor, in his speech during the opening ceremony.
This year's honorary caregiver was awarded to Steve Geerts.
The last time Relay for Life was moved inside was the during the flooding of 2008 and was held in the Chickasaw Wellness Complex. The committee quickly realized that the event had grown so much in the past years that they would no longer fit in that space comfortably.
The evening began with a free will donation dinner that was open to the public, a performance by expression dancers, and the New Hampton High School speech students.
This year's event was special because the American Cancer Society recognized its 100th birthday, and to celebrate, the committee had a cake made to be shared by all the Relay for Life participants.
