Our Parents

This summer I worked at a summer camp for boys that were mostly jewish and come from rich families. The camp was an all sports camp that offered a variety of different activities. It seemed great!

But parents just can't get off their high horse and if they went, one hundred percent there kid was going to go. Why bother ask the child if it was what he wanted to do? It didn't matter. It was time for their son to grow up and become a real boy by running around and playing with other boys his own age.

The only problem with this is that some of the boys were completely out of their element here. One boy I took care of was a reader and writer. He was literally writing his own book... Why send this kid to camp? Because his father saw him as a mama's boy and needed him to grow up. This boy wished every day to go home and cried all the time about home sickness. He was not ready to be pushed into this camp.

Parents need to step back and ask themselves if they are doing the right thing. I believe that little boy is going to be scarred for life from his summer at camp. He is going to grow up resenting his parents for sending him there. There are so many different camps in the world, so why push him to do this one? So that he grows up to be an all american? Just from looking at him, I'm sorry, but that was never going to happen.

Good Luck Kid
